Jesus' Vulnerability Touches My Heart

As I am reading through the pages of "The Songs of Jesus" by Tim Keller,

I came across one of Tim's prayers,

"Father, your Son was no Stoic. He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He was constantly weeping, sighing, and exulting in spirit. I confess that I either deny my emotions, trying to put on a good front, or let them simply carry me away. Show me how to bring them honestly yet submissively to you. Amen."

Jesus came down to earth two thousand years ago to show us that a true nature of human beings involves some level of vulnerability (in other words, it is healthy to be vulnerable at times). If Jesus had been vulnerable with his emotions, it probably isn't unacceptable for me to be vulnerable with my feelings as well.

I've always thought that I couldn't and shouldn't feel any of these negative emotions such as sorrow, anger, disappointment, fear, and frustration and I've tried my absolute best to deny them all without realizing I was rotting inside. Jesus, being God himself, already knew that humans ought to express and let out their emotions in a health way such as by praying to the Lord and seeking support from church community as God had made us that way. Jesus' example of vulnerability gave me the courage to be vulnerable myself, and my heart and soul had been more positive, peaceful and healthy ever since then. I learned two main things from this particular prayer, which is that 1) Jesus already knew vulnerability was an essential part of human nature 2) We ought to follow the steps of Jesus and be vulnerable at times like him to protect our heart, soul, and mind. The extent to which we become vulnerable with our emotions to other people, and to whom to be vulnerable is a whole another issue which we must learn through reading the Scripture and through gaining more life experiences, but we can rest assured that we can be fully vulnerable to our God.

My final point is that as I live out my life and gain more life experiences, the more I realize how Jesus really is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" in many ways.
